Abstract
Investigates whether leadership styles, particularly relating to the use of power and the sharing of goal information, differ between men and women in autocratic situations and whether such potential leadership model differences affect decision effectiveness. Reviews relevant research, and describes a subject‐blind experiment designed to favour an autocratic approach, involving 40 teams of US graduate business school students, who were given a limited time to complete a problem‐solving exercise using written correspondence as the only communication method. Finds that greater task‐information sharing behaviour existed where both leaders were female, and, surprisingly, that problem‐solving effectiveness was greater where the leader used a participative leadership style. Reveals no evidence that subordinates evaluated the competence of male and female leaders differently, but suggests that subordinates are happier to initiate correspondence where the leader is of the same gender. Discusses the implications of the findings, concluding that leadership styles are situation‐ rather than people‐based, and acknowledges certain limitations of the study.

Abstract
Discusses research ideas on the distinctions between data, information and knowledge, the categories of knowledge and knowledge‐processing activities in Holsapple and Whinston’s (HW’s) taxonomy (1987, 1988a, 1988b), and their application to markets and the activities of the firm. Describes a manufacturing firm’s inputs, production processes and outputs in terms of HW’s taxonomy, pointing out that management must filter the information surrounding the firm to turn it into knowledge of various types, e.g. descriptive, derived, assimilative etc. Considers the role of information for customers of and investors in the firm; and the relationship between knowledge and efficiency. Identifies three types of knowledge workers (builders, stewards and appliers) and calls for further research on the taxonomy of knowledge and standards of knowledge within the finance discipline.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to critically analyse the application of present value (PV) practised in the concept of time value of money (TVM) from the perspective of maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah (objective of Islamic law) explained by Ibn ‘Ashur. The analysis is important as this concept has been adopted in the practice of Islamic accounting measurement.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper uses qualitative research approach. The authors first review literature related to TVM in Islamic perspective to understand the extent to which the scholarly articles have been discussing this topic. Furthermore, the authors conduct face-to-face interviews with the experts to comprehend the means of TVM application in the recent Islamic accounting practices. The tawhid (monotheistic) paradigm is further used with special reference to the concept of maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah of Ibn ‘Ashur to critically analyse the practice of TVM in Islamic accounting measurement.
Findings
This study identifies the opposing views among the experts on the topic of TVM from the Islamic perspective. That is, the experts’ opinion on this issue can be classified into two. Firstly, a view that rejects TVM and proposes the concept of economic value of time. Secondly, an opinion that recognises TVM with the basis of bay’ al-mu’ajjal (deferred sale). This paper further critically analyses these two opposing opinions. The discussion is established based on the theory of maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah as explained by Ibn ‘Ashur and the excerpts from interviewing the experts. This work draws a conclusion that such PV-based measurement of TVM does not meet the Islamic principles explained in the theory of Ibn ‘Ashur’s maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah. Thus, the practice of PV measurement in Islamic accounting is debatable.
Research limitations/implications
This study does not establish a positivism discussion. It is thus the generalisation of this work is not applicable to the Islamic perspective in general. Rather, it is limited to Ibn ‘Ashur’s maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah.
Practical implications
An analysis of PV measurement adoption in Islamic accounting from maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah perspective is practically important to raise the awareness that such practice is debatable in Islamic principles. That is, such debate opens new arena for academics, industry professionals and other related stakeholders to further discuss an ideal practice of Islamic accounting.
Originality/value
This paper is among the pioneers that analyses the concept of TVM, in particular relation to PV measurement in Islamic accounting practice from the perspective of Ibn ‘Ashur’s maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah.

Outlines previous research on the effects of insider trading on share prices and reactions to the tightening up of US laws against illegal trading. Calculates returns for a sample of large managerial purchases made after the new legislation (1993‐1995) and announced in the Wall Street Journal to test for the presence of asymmetric information, agency conflicts and undervaluation; using firm size, market‐to‐book ratio, Q ratio and price‐earnings ratio as proxies. Finds that share prices react positively to large managerial purchases, especially if the firm is small, undervalued and/or experiencing conflicts between managers and shareholders; and that this effect is not reversed within a year.

Talks about the cultural aspects of negotiating in China and compares this with Western approaches. Focuses on cultural factors (and the dominant role of Confucianism), followed by steps in the negotiating process. Explains Confucian ethics and how that translates into everyday behaviour of how to treat and address other people. Points out that the Chinese will only do business with people they know and trust, so the importance of first building good personal relationships cannot be overstated. Suggests ways to make a good first impression, including attending banquets and other social occasions, although that opens up a further behavioural minefield. Recommends viewing doing business with the Chinese as a marriage contract based on old‐fashioned courting, rather than in the West, where entering a business relationship could be deemed the equivalent of a marriage of convenience.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the applicability of the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) as an effective tool for decreasing failure risk in the early phase of the new product development (NPD), which adds to existing literature on the application of FMEA in NPD.
Design/methodology/approach
Through the application of action research (AR) methodology, it was possible to develop a case study examining the use of FMEA to decrease NPD risk in an early phase of NPD execution.
Findings
The importance and immediate gains of identifying NPD failures support FMEA's usefulness for NPD risk decrease. Moreover, its user-friendliness, timeliness and cost advantages facilitate the introduction of FMEA in the early phase of NPD execution.
Originality/value
FMEA is a well-known method used in manufacturing companies to identify and correct failures in products, processes and systems. This article explores the lack of practice-oriented evidence on the use of FMEA in the early phase of NPD execution and provides support to its applicability and effectiveness.
